Painted Stair Runner {Reveal}

I'm so very excited!

They're done, they're done!

Remember how unfortunate my stairwell used to be?

I think it looks so much better now...

Ignore the green walls. One project at a time, you know?

This was my inspiration photo:

via Pottery Barn "Kids' Rooms"

And here is the final product...

I love how the faux stair skirt lends a crisp look to the space, and I think all that ridiculous taping (hours of my life, people!) paid off.

I also adore how the painted runner turned out. Yellow can be such a tricky color, but I am head over heels in love with this one -- it's a warm muted gold, definitely not a school bus throwback.
And even though the teeny tiny dark stripes nearly gave me an ulcer and some gray hairs, I'm also really glad I took the time to tape, paint, re-tape, and patch them until my eyes crossed.

We're talkin' several-hours-on-my-hands-and-knees-using-a-baby-paintbrush patching.

Did I mention that I'm so, so, so excited that my life is back my stairs are done?

  6. FYI: I think your stairwell picture is from a Pottery Barn Book: Kids' Rooms. (I checked it out from the library last year and took a picture of it for my own files.)

And yes! It looks lovely! Do you have any concerns about little people slipping? (I ask because we have a rug running down our steps and I don't really care for it. But I'm afraid of taking it off and watching my kiddos slip.)

    ReplyDelete
  7. Thanks for the source update!

As for slipping, I'm not overly concerned right now... the paint itself isn't slippery at all, but I admit I'm not 100% done with the coats of poly so if you're interested I'd be happy to givce you an update once it's totally complete.

It is a basement staircase that doesn't get a lot of traffic right now (talk to me AFTER we gut our basement and make it supah fabulous!)... are your stairs wood? My mother's wood floors have texture in them and aren't really slippery... but my BIL's old house had the slipperiest wood floors of ALL time. They were gorgeous but I'd never recommend them just for that reason... so maybe it just depends your specific flooring.

    ~Stephanie C

ps: someone mentioned slipping... you could always throw some *texture* into the paint (if you saved some of that yellow paint), you know, like they put on garage floors. It'll give you a no-slip surface - not that you want to paint again lol, I'm just sayin'

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wow, that is amazing. I love the yellow. I can't believe you did that just with paint! (and a lot of hard work too I'm sure!) Great job!

  54. Thanks for the info. I would love to hear how the stairs work out (slippery-wise) when you are completed and have a chance to use them more.

And to answer your question, our stairs are wood. The "rise?" is painted, but not the top part that you step on. I'm curious what they look like under the runner rug -- hmmmmmm…? :)

Thanks for all your comments!! I am completely floored at the response these stairs have gotten. WOW!

  77. OMG I LOVE LOVE LOVE this! You have inspired me to contemplate the very real option of ripping out my carpet on the stairs and doing this... your tip on painting every other step first was brillant.. sadly, I think I would have only realized this AFTER the first foot/paint print!

  90. Anna - The stairs are simply perfection. BEAUTIFUL work!
Now, that you have me interested in possibly tackling such a project on my back stairwell, did you ever consider some kind of super tape for the tiny stripe? Not sure if my old knees could handle the precision work you undertook.
    Thanks,

  91. Wonderful project! I found this via Pinterest. How has the paint held up? Are they very slippery?

  92. Really beautiful stairs but it requires lot of care.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Amazing work! You've inspired me to try it out on my own stairs! How do you manage to keep the scuffmarks off the treads though?

    ReplyDelete
  94. Thanks! Well, I made peace with the fact that it would never stay in perfect shape... the worn look is actually one of the things I liked in the inspiration photo from PB kids. But if you put waterbased poly on it it will be much more scrubbable and it will last longer too... magic erasers are my friends. ;)

  98. The yellow colour is lovely, do you mind revealing the paint colour and brand?

    ReplyDelete
  99. So funny! I did the same thing to my stairs at about the same time you did after I removed all of them and added a skirt board. I REALLY wish I had thought to add a faux skirt board like you did! Mine "stair runner" looks more like the one from Sarah's House on HGTV (wider band on the outside stripe and numbers I attached to the risers). I love the look of them, but they show EVERYTHING! Do you have the same problem? I am actually debating making the middle "runner" a darker color to help alleviate some of the dirt that shows. Yep, I'm ok with the dirt being there, I just don't want to see it! LOL!

    ReplyDelete

  100. Shawna McClenenDecember 23, 2012 8:47 AM

I did something very similar to this with my stairs. I have 3 stripes on each side of my "runner." I'm not quite sure what I was thinking when I decided this because taping off the stripes was very difficult. I was SO happy that I spent the couple extra bucks and bought the green Frog brand tape. You do not have to worry about sealing the edges of the paint or having ANY paint get under the tape. Just pull it up and your stripes will be perfect. If you are thinking out doing this, I HIGHLY recommend Frog Tape!

Simple improvements can go a long way. You may be in a bad mood as you enter such space and then you see the work done on the stairs and it uplifts you. I life what you have done with your stairs. Your customized design makes the space more cozy. Thanks for sharing!
