A Girl's Bedroom Design

Yesterday I shared my nephew's bedroom and today I'm excited to share his sister's bedroom that I also worked on the same weekend last summer. So. much. painting!

My niece is twelve, and she really wanted a fun bedroom. She is definitely not a pink-loving princess type, so I sat down with her and she picked her bedding set which I used as a jumping off point for the rest of the room. Her favorite color is purple, so of course I had to find a way to incorporate that as well! She also loves to draw, so I wanted to surprise her with a desk and a system to display her artwork.

Here's her (messy!) room before:

I faced some of the same changes in her bedroom as I did in her older brother's room: her walls, trim, and ceiling all needed to be painted, and her plaster walls required a lot of patching. In addition, she had more existing furniture, so I needed to paint those peices as well.

To be honest, I don't know if I've ever painted as much as I did that one 3-day weekend... by the time I drove back to Idaho, my hand was in a perma-paintbrush claw.

Here's her bedroom, after:

Source list:

  1. I LOVE the idea of using a cafe rod and clips to display artwork! I never would have thought of that. I am so going to have to do that in my son's playroom to display the crafts he brings home from play school!

  2. Love the artwork display. My daughter so needs that. Great post- I have a preteen who's room needs a serious makeover. Thanks for sharing!

  3. LOVE the rods and clips! So much better than the ribbon and clothespins I've been using.

  4. LOVE it!! Belongs in a magazine!! How blessed your niece & nephew are to have such a talented Aunt :)

  13. the desk looks great, can't believe you made that! and i love that comforter set. i bet she's thrilled with her new room!

  14. Oh so cute! I love the colors you used!

  15. The room design is really a question of your wishes: Remember, this is your site! Preferably, however, many people opt for muted colors and quiet that these models are considered less tiring for the eyes and more conducive to relaxation and rest. An obvious area of discussion is when two people of different persuasions attempt to devise a plan to meet at a time. This problem can be overcome by intelligent choice of colors and patterns halfway between the two flavors.

  16. the desk came out great, do you mind sharing how much it cost you to build?

  17. Well, it was over 1 1/2 years ago so I don't remember exactly, but judging by my chicken scratched notes I think the lumber cost was around $70, then whatever paint and primer I used? :)
