I'm finally done painting, and the crazy Cirque du Soleil ladder has been removed from my stairwell and my life (for good, hopefully). I still have a lot to do in this space, but I wanted to share the progress.
Here's a reminder of the mess I was dealing with when I started to pull wallpaper:
And here are a couple photos of the stairwell walls (and ceiling) after fresh paint:
I'm still loving my new $10 lantern, I think it looks great in the small stairwell, casting all those fabulous shadows on the ceiling and walls.
As for the stairwell itself, I like it more too, even without anything on the walls or Phase 2 (the official name for the stairs part of this project) complete.
Speaking of Phase 2, I ripped all the ugly beige carpet from the steps and uncovered this:
Old vinyl flooring. Yuck.
I have a sinking feeling that I'm not going to like Phase 2 of my little stairwell project.
(My husband, the one who hates coming home to new holes in walls and ripped out carpet, would no doubt love to say, "I told you so!" right about now. But he would never do that, because he loves me... and values his life.)

Wow, the walls/ceiling look fantastic! Can't imagine how great they'll look when you put your creative touches there! Sorry about the things hiding under your carpet, but look forward to seeing what you do with that! If you get a chance, check out my blog at www.lookingupforhelp.blogspot.com Would love to hook up!
This looks great already--can't wait to see the rest!
Love that "values his life" comment. That coulda been me saying that!
Looks great! The walls look like they're almost identical to the color of my stairway :) What are your plans for the floor?
I love the colors you chose!
The walls look amazing! Seriously? Who puts vinyl laminant on stairs? really? Good luck. We ripped out LAYERS from our bathroom floor, and that was a tiny space.. it took forever. Its worth investing $20 or so in tools to help scrape!
Thanks girls! I'm not looking forward to the vinyl, it's stuck on there GOOD. As for the plan... hmm.. it's a surprise! ;)
I mean, let's look at the positive, shall we? The vinyl is fug...but look at those toes of yours! ;)
I hope the vinyl teardown is much safer than the painting of the stairwell. Looks great!
Love the walls (and your toes!)! I applaud your bravery in tackling that vinyl. :)
Stairwell looks FAB now!
Good work on the painting - outstanding actually! I was getting vertigo just from your photos. Don't know how you did it girl, you rock!
WOW!!! Great job so far. Can't wait to phase 2. Keep up the good work!
This keeps getting better & better!! Well...probably just for us readers, I'm sure for you it's getting harder & harder! It looks AMAZING & I am in AWE of you're giftedness (my new word for you!) Hang in there, we're all pulling for you! Kim
eee it looks better already! i want to redo our stairs after finishing the railing last summer. can't wait to see how it turns out!
kimberly.
The walls look gorgeous! I especially love how your new light fixture throws off so many pretty beams of light on the walls. So lovely!
I did our stairs a few weeks ago and there were still orange shag remnants in places. If you pull out that glittery goodness you might find something wonderful (like wood) underneath! I mean, it's getting better with each layer already :)
Wow, looks like a ton of work! Looking really good so far!

Nice work! You did a fantastic job given the mess that the wallpaper left behind - that's no small feat! (It's giving me anxiety about taking down some of the wallpaper in my house though - oh how I hate that process!). Bummer about the stairs - who would have seen that one coming?
So glad he values his life, I suppose my husband does too! I so hate wallpaper but love the way it looks. I still need to tackle my entryway and stairs again to put on a faux finish that appears like wallpaper but it's such a huge job and that ladder is brutal
Looking great! Love the light fixture!
The paint looks great! It makes a world of difference. I feel your pain with the vinyl flooring. I think I have that exact same flooring in my bathroom! Can.Not.Wait. to tear it out. But my husband also gets irritated when he comes home to torn up stuff. I can't understand why... : )
It is looking so good! The color that you picked out is super cute. I have been on the hunt for a good brassy light to transform into a black beauty ever since I saw yours a couple weeks ago. Your hard work is definitely paying off...it all looks so good!
