{All That Glitters} Party Shoes for New Year's Eve

Every once in a while I get bit by the crafty bug; it happened just this week, in fact. Mike and I made some last minute New Year's Eve plans to attend a local animal shelter's gala to help raise funds to build a facility, which left me scrambling to find an outfit and a babysitter!

I found a pair of platform pumps at my local Target on clearance; I liked their shape and decided to glam them up for the holiday. If there's a holiday that calls for sparkle, it's certainly New Year's Eve.

I really wanted full glitter coverage, so I went with Krylon's Glitter Blast spray, which is a newish product that I've seen a lot on blogs but hadn't had the chance to use myself.  This product's claim to fame is its full coverage and "3-dimensional look." I chose the 'Golden Glow' color and bought one can at Michael's with a coupon.

I taped the sole of my heels with painter's tape and used a craft blade to create a nice sharp line along the curved sole.

Then I went to town with the glitter spray...

... for about 7 seconds, until the button got stuck, all traces of glitter disappeared, and clear propellant started spurting out continuously. I couldn't make it stop even after monkeying with it a little and shaking it, so after getting covered in tiny bits of glitter goo that would ooze from the nozzle occasionally, eventually I just had to walk away while the can emptied itself and left me with a puddle of goo and glitter shrapnel all over my hands.

I went back to the store to exchange my defective can, only to discover that my store was out of Golden Glow! Gasp! I had one shoe with a coat of glitter on it so there was no turning back. My parents were visiting from Utah the next day so I asked my mother buy two cans (two, just in case!) and bring them up with her. She was game because she's nice like that.

Little did I know that can #2 would last twelve seconds and can #3, two seconds. (two!!) At this point is was me vs. the glitter spray. I called my local store and discovered they had received a truck and now had plenty of my color (woohoo!) so I picked one. last. can. up. Only one, because I'm stubborn.

Can #4? Lasted five seconds. This is the part where I kicked something. I fought back. I shook the can like a woman possessed. I twisted the nozzle. I tried to press the button to no avail (still stuck), but sometimes after shaking and twisting it would start spraying glitter full force for a few seconds until it clogged again and I'd have to repeat the cycle. I got glitter all over everything... but I drained that can. I don't know if I figured out how to beat the Glitter Blast or if I just got lucky. Honestly, I don't even care. I'm just glad my shoes are glittered and clear coated and I can move on with my life.

So cute, right? I love them and I'm excited to wear them on New Year's Eve. As for the Glitter Blast, though, well... I love the idea. The spray is fabulous looking once applied and makes me giddy, but the actual delivery method is lacking and in my unsolicited opinion Krylon has some work to do on this product. Four cans for 2 shoes is a little reee-diculous. Just sayin'.

A couple observations:
  • I saw on Choose to Thrive that short sprays help the can avoid clogging, but I was always too afraid to let go of the nozzle because I was just praying the sucker would keep spraying, so I can't vouch for that.
  • The can I shook the longest (5 minutes!) lasted the shortest amount of time. I tried to see if extra shaking made a difference and it didn't appear that it did.

    2011 Goal Review

This is going to hurt. This is the post where I go through my list of 2011 goals that I wrote about in January and see how much I accomplished, and how much I veered off course. I'm practically an expert in getting off task, so this should be interesting.

Here's my post from this January copied in full, with all sorts of embarrassing notes in red, the color of shame. Haha!

    ____________________________________
Before I hop back into living room fixin' uppin' I have one more thing to do to set up 2011 to be the BEST. YEAR. EVER!! Or at least a marginally productive year where hopefully I can stay on task to accomplish even a small percentage of my goals. I tend to get sidetracked easily, y'all. (Foreshadowing, anyone?)

So now, in honor of my ridiculous love of whimsically named lists I present:

Anna's Big Ole' List Of Short-ish Term House Projects That Will Make Her Husband Cringe and Pout and Possibly Stomp About A Bit, But Will Bring Anna Much Joy And Needed Motivation To Stay On Task Throughout The Upcoming Year.

    Living Room

    • Pick a new paint color (no snide comments from family, please) - (I picked not one but two! Talk about overachieving.)
    • Trim out windows & backdoor  (Yeeaaah, that's right. I'm 2 for 2 so far.)
    • Install baseboard (Hmm. nope.)
    • Make two cabinet doors for built-in  (Um, not this one either.)
    • Build sofa table with cubbies  (Redemption!)
    • Convert back door into dutch door  (Oops. I bought the hardware, that counts, right?)
    • Pine away for a new white slipcovered sectional to replace my ugly sad sack couch (Pining!)
Total: 4/7 - Not horrible, but not awesome.

    Kitchen/Garage Entry

    • Demo built-in desk in the nook of shame (Nope!)
    • Move staircase and landing over to create more of an entry "mud room" space (Ouch... not yet!)
    • Build bench (Ooh. The shame.)
    • Paint knotty pine paneling on nook ceiling white (YES! I was getting worried there.)
    • Pine for the day I can afford to redo my kitchen (I am really good at pining.)
Total:  2/5 - Not so hot. Especially since one of them was only pining. At least I added hooks to my nook - why, oh why didn't I put that on my goal list?? Let's move on.

    Dining Room

    • Paint knotty pine paneling on ceiling above table white (Nooo! Only one thing and I blew it!)
Total: 0/1 - I am hanging my head in shame, for realsies.

    Master Bedroom

    • Prime and paint crown molding (And it only took me a year!)
    • Install baseboard (No on the baseboard again...)
    • Trim out door and closet (Trying to convince myself that 1960's round casing is super cool.)
    • Bifold closet door makeover (I pulled off the knobs and now have to claw at it from the floor to make it open, does that earn me any points?)
Total: 1/4 - In my defense my eyes are shut most of the time I spend in this room.

    Upstairs Bathroom

    • Install baseboard (2011 was not my year for baseboard. I don't want to talk about it. Sniff.)
Total: 0/1 - Dumb. Stupid bathroom!

    Guest Room

    • Paint stripes - (yeeeeeeeeah, about that. Changed my mind.)
Total: 0/1 - But this is sort of positive, because if I had painted it, I'd just have to change it! Trying to look on the bright side of things...

    Front Room
    • Install board & batten (Drat! Didn't get to it in 2011, but it's happening sooooon!)
    • Trim out doors and windowseat (Doing this when I board & batten)
    • Paint ceiling (Nope. It's still a glorious high gloss yellow.)
    • Remove ugly painted tile entryway and install slate (Blargh. Blerg. Blork!!)
Total: 0/4 - What DID I do this year? Sheesh.

    Boys' Room

    • Build decorative bookcases or shelving (I'm pretty sure this wasn't referring to the closet, but look at me cross it off - yeaaah, baby. There are shelves in that closet. I say it counts.)
    • Replace light fixture (Yeah, I did this - but just with a temporary one to remove the fan because of the boys' bunk bed - I'm still counting it, though!)
    • New window coverings (Nooooope. I bought fabric, and then ignored it for a year.)
    • Find new dresser (I built a closet instead! I'm crossing this off, and you can't stop me!)
    Total: 3/4 - Yeeeaaah, that's right.

    Laundry Room
    • Replace sink, faucet, counter (Um, nope. I did mess the room up pretty bad though.)
    • Makeover cabinet and shelf (Hmm... no)
    • Build drying rack (Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. Oops!)
Total: 0/3 - It looks super trashy too. This might be my biggest fail of 2011. Haha.

So what do you think? I'm nothing if not ambitious! And incredibly unfocused.

All righty then. I need to go rest my head. Let's all cross our fingers for a more on-task 2012!

    A Year in Projects: 2011

I hope you all had an amazing holiday weekend and are now slowly recovering - we have all been laying pretty low, relaxing, eating too many cookies, playing a little Wii (except me 'cause I suck) and reading books. My kids have been in their jammies 90% of the last three days, I kid you not. Mother of the year, right here!

I have a few posts that I need to cram in this last week of 2011 (!!!) though... so I might as well start now, since the hubster is watching his favorite type of movie (any movie with the buzzwords 'gritty' 'espionage' or 'thriller') and I am pretending to watch. Except not really, because I am a bad wife. There, I said it. Ha! Espionage, shmespionage; that's what I say.

Anyhoosies, 2011 has been quite a year, and although I didn't get everything I had hoped for accomplished, (surprised, anyone?) I still managed to knock out a few projects. And now, for your viewing pleasure (and my list making obsession), I present my top 10 projects of 2011... (drum roll please)

I can't wait for 2012 - hopefully I'll get to knock some crap down and cut some stuff in half. And hopefully, you'll be along for the ride!

    Merry Christmas

It's here; my favorite time of my favorite evening of the year.
The quiet, mysterious, wonderful anticipation that is Christmas Eve.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!"
    Luke 2:13-14

I hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday filled with light and love.

    Merry Christmas, everyone.

    Hot Fudge - Easiest Neighbor Gift Ever {plus labels}

Still looking for a quick gift for neighbors or coworkers? Here's the easiest, quickest idea out there... I just made it this afternoon, and I had to share!

I found this recipe on Our Best Bites and have been planning on making it for months. I ordered bottles from Specialty Bottle, but any small canning jar would be perfect! It takes only 3 ingredients and about 5 minutes. Easiest thing ever?

1 can sweetened condensed milk, 1/2 stick butter, 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips in a pot over medium heat. Melt it. Eat it. Bottle it. Gift it. Easy peasy. (If you want more detailed instructions you should hop over to see the original recipe at Our Best Bites!)

My jars hold 8 ounces and each recipe fills two of them.

And because I want to make things even easier, I made little 2-inch round labels to share!

Holiday Front Porch Extravaganza: DailyBuzz Moms 9x9

Hey y'all, I'm participating in the DailyBuzz Moms 9x9 challenge again - this time it's front doors decorated for the holidays! I had so much fun last month, I guess I just decided to go for it again. Oh, and I decorate my front porch anyway so I figured it wouldn't be anything too difficult... boy, was I wrong.

I think I need to hire someone to make Christmas cookies for me because I am running out of time this year and I admit, I was racing the light tonight to get my porch finished in time to photograph before darkness set in. It's those dang ornaments; twisting floral wire in 18°F weather, y'all...

As much as I planned on doing my porch ahead of time, it really just came together in the last week or so.
Like I already mentioned I put off attaching the ornaments until the very last minute, but I didn't stumble across the little tree until two or three days ago when I was out at Target and noticed that all of their trees were 50% off and they happened to have a cute little 4-foot tall, pre-lit, pre-decorated number that worked with my overall Christmas color scheme. It was love at first sight, and because of the sale it was a great deal. Never you  mind that 45 of the 50  lights were in the bottom half and I had to buy a strand of 100 lights and some silver ornament doohickeys (picks? Does someone out there speak English to craft?)  to "fix" it. Still a good deal!

Luckily I already had a giant pile of dead wood on hand, ready to set the Christmassy mood...

And I found the oversized ornaments at a dollar store - I wish they were a tiny bit bigger. I even entertained the idea of spray painting oversized play balls (you know me, I'll paint just about anything) but I couldn't find any for less than $8. Dang off-season unavailability.

All the ornaments were dollar store (or dollar section - Target, holla!) ornaments, in fact.

I wanted a little mooooood lighting so I threw together some epsom salt "snow" lanterns...

I love how it turned out! It's super Christmassy - I'm all about the classic colors. It's just about the only time red is invited into my home, so I make the most of it.

Do you like it? Does it scream curb appeal? Hahaha :)

    Merry Christmas!!!
